about

Hailing from the tiny country of Luxembourg comes this hypnotic collection of cerebral electronica that harks back to the glorious 90’s heyday of the genre but also recent masters of the art such as Rival Consoles, Nils Frahm and Four Tet. Mike Zweyer is perhaps better known as a producer of LoFi Hip Hop under his This Is Tomorrow guise but with this project for Tangential Music he has ditched the MPC2000 and focussed on creation solely through synthesizers.

‘Unfold’ really does unfold with layers of analogue warmth and poetic storytelling.

Album opener ‘Ping’ suggests Mike’s background in loop-making. Simple nudges of kick drum, a clear and wistful keyboard repetition surrounded by multiple countermelodies that swirl and wander.

The title track ‘Unfold’ is a resting heartbeat of gentle loops and intricate percussion with a gorgeous soothing chord sequence. Really quite lovely.

‘All Bridges Burned’ has the distinctive feel of Warp Records legends Plaid. Clattering and complex. Cold walks in a Northern European city, opaque in emotion and very much suited to a blue sepia-toned movie.

‘Lost At Sea’ opens with tense artificial strings before crackling into life like a stalled engine.  Can you have a gentle foreboding? If so, this is what it sounds like.

‘Science Of Sleep’ could be an outtake from Boards Of Canada’s ‘Tomorrow’s Harvest’ album. Horizontal dance music, a soundtrack to mellow transcendence. Organic sounding percussion, a nursery rhyme-like melody line repeating throughout as washes of synthetic sweeps and chords plunge forwards.

‘In The End’ embeds resonant dread into itself. Oddly funky, tonally Drexciyan, mid-80’s Detroit via Luxembourg.

‘Unfold’ is a focussed and commendable mini-LP of hallucinatory electronica that sits alongside it’s influences with ease.
